Choosing your bridal lehenga
Fabric, weight, colour and fittings — what to decide first, and how far ahead.

Start four to six months before the wedding. Custom bridal lehengas usually need two or three fittings, and heavy hand embroidery such as zardozi or dabka takes time to finish well.
Pick the fabric for the season: raw silk and velvet hold their shape in winter, while georgette, organza and net stay light for summer and day functions. If you will be on your feet for hours, ask the designer for the finished weight — many brides prefer a lehenga under 6 kg.
Red and maroon remain classic, but pastels, ivory and deep jewel tones photograph beautifully too. Hold fabric swatches next to your jewellery and in daylight before you decide.

Sherwani, bandhgala or Indo-western?
Matching the outfit to each ceremony, and getting the fit right.
A sherwani is the traditional choice for the pheras; a bandhgala or Jodhpuri suit works well for the reception; kurta sets and Nehru jackets are comfortable for the mehendi and haldi.
Fit matters more than embellishment. The shoulders and chest should sit cleanly, and the sherwani should end around the knee. Share your measurements with the designer early and plan one trial fitting.
Complete the look with a safa or stole in a shade from the bride’s outfit, a brooch, and juttis or mojaris that are broken in before the day.

Comfort first: soft linings, light fabrics and room to move.

Choose cotton or silk blends with a soft lining so outfits don’t itch through long ceremonies. Avoid heavy sequins near the neck and underarms.
Buy with a little room to grow if the wedding is a few months away, and keep a simple second outfit for the evening.
